The music on this recording of works written or arranged for treble voices can be looked at as a set of concentric circles in the way they are ordered on the disc. The outer circle (tracks 1–5 and 15–18) feature unique and challenging folk songs in several distinctive languages. The innermost circle is made up of we would think of as straightforward “classical,” comprising sacred texts by J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart and Antonio Lotti. In between are other sacred settings, but ones imbued with a harmonic language and/or rhythmic sensibility that give them the “rawer” feel of the folk tradition (tracks 6–8 and 13–14).
